About the Artist
I’m a contemporary feminist artist based in California.
My work focuses on inspirational women from across the world, by exploring the lack of female representation in most fields of work.
Growing up I was often immersed in encyclopedias, ignoring the fact that none of them showcased female professionals. After I had my daughter, I was determined to shine a light on the lives and work of trailblazer women.
I consider myself a world citizen, as I have lived and worked in 7 countries, in Europe, Asia, and America. This greatly influences my perspective on life, and informs my art practice. My professional background includes Fashion and Jewelry Design, and Illustration. I studied Fashion Design at Academia Internacional de la Moda, Barcelona, Illustration at Seattle Pacific University, Seattle, Fashion Business at University of Washington, Seattle, Jewelry Design at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore, and Fine Arts at City College of San Francisco. I also have a Diploma of Marketing from ESIC Business School, Spain, a B.A. in Business Administration from University of Lincolnshire, UK, and a Masters in International Marketing from LSBU, London.
My portraiture comprises mostly of acrylic on wood painting, and printmaking, and is centered on honoring my subjects and their legacy. I spend time researching each subject, their work, and the challenges they faced as a woman in their industry.
My painting technique involves numerous thin layers that gently interact with each other. This painstaking, almost meditative process, allows me to immerse myself in the uniqueness and individuality of each subject.
Some of the women portrayed in my series are Maya Angelou, Yayoi Kusama, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Dorothea Lange, Rosalind Franklin, and Tarana Burke.
You can follow me on Instagram @lazaroarts.sf as we celebrate women and girls across the globe.
I am currently taking orders for work on commission.
